MANITOUWABA LAKE HOUSE

Description

A new low lying stepped mass of building blocks sits at lakes edge in the wilderness of Parry Sound. Rhythmic black timber clad masses pop against a natural back drop of Manitouwaba Lakes’s distinct wooded landscape.

A steeply sloped site from North / West to South / East required a solution that integrates elevational changes and captures lake vistas while considering the sites linear nature. While an oversimplification of sorts a building block methodology was used to take advantage of and highlight the sites unique topography.

Public and private spaces are physically and intentionally separated by mass, and a change in elevation internally. The main spaces; kitchen, dining, living, office and primary suite are orientated adjacent to a dramatic lake view. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility spaces are nestled into the back of the building and thus the landscape with views into the depths of the forest. As with most Daymark projects, public and private spaces are separated into individual pods, a glazed link connects these spaces in dramatic fashion providing a delicate embrace and pulling you through the structure on approach with immediate lake vistas.

While more complex considerations were discussed to rationalize the various building heights, ultimately the beauty and simplicity of a building block type approach created a playful balance and dance between each mass. Stepped blocks and their connection points create moments and opportunities to extrude and cut sections to give way to a functional and logically laid out floor plan to suit family life on the lake.
